To the President of TUBITAK, Prof. Nuket Yetis

To the Turkish Minister of Science, Technology and Industry, Nihat Ergun

I am told by some turkish scientific friends that the Feza Gursey Institute would be attached to the Informatics and Information Safety Research Center at the Gebze campus of TUBITAK as of July 15, 2011.
To all effect this means the closing of the Institute, a closing that I believe is a terrible mistake and that will have dramatic consequences on the future of research in Turkey.

In spite of the total number of visitors, conferences and national and international summer schools with participants from all over Turkey and abroad, TUBITAK does not see a value to keep Feza Gursey Institute operational; apparently TUBITAK is not convinced of the value of fundamental research in theoretical physics and pure mathematics.

I have been visiting Bogazici University and Gursay Istitute three times in the last year. In fact I was even planning to co-organize, with scientists from the Institute, an International School in Mathematics and Physics that would had seen the participation of a Field Medalist among a group of leading international experts.

TUBITAK should reverse the decision to dissolve the institute.

I strongly believe that dissolving the one and only institute of its kind in Istanbul would cause irreversible damage to the progress of theoretical physics and pure mathematics, in fact to scientific research altogether in Turkey.
