Dear Minister Ergun,
I have just found out that there is a proposal to close the Feza
Gursey Institute in Istanbul. This is a most worrying proposal as the Feza Gursey Institute
is a leading centre for physics and mathematics in Turkey and helps gives Turkey
an international profile in science. Due to the reputation of the
Feza Gursey Institute I organised a conference at the Institute in March this year.
I was extremely impressed with the professionalism of the Institute and the high standard of the
talks given by its members during the conference. This left me with a very high
opinion of science in Turkey. Indeed, a number of new research collaborations
with Turkish scientists were initiated due to this conference.
I give my strongest support to the Feza Gursey Institute. I hope that
you will be able to find the money to support this internationally recognised
Institute into the future. The continuation of the Feza Gursey Institute will help
keep science in Turkey in high international regard.
